ACB News | May 15, 2025 – Sydney OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models in ChatGPT, expanding its offering of specialized tools tailored for coding, instruction-following, and everyday developer tasks. The update, announced on May 14, 2025, brings the popular GPT-4.1—previously only available through API access—directly into ChatGPT for all paid users. GPT-4.1 has been widely praised by developers since its release in April, thanks to its superior performance in web development and precision instruction handling. The model now provides a compelling alternative to OpenAI’s earlier coding-focused models, such as o3 and o4-mini, for routine development needs. Starting immediately, GPT-4.1 is available in the “more models” menu for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Enterprise and Education (Edu) users will gain access in the coming weeks. Usage limits for GPT-4.1 are aligned with those of GPT-4o for paid users. In parallel, OpenAI also introduced GPT-4.1 mini, a lightweight and efficient variant that replaces the previous GPT-4o mini. This smaller model offers noticeable improvements in instruction-following, coding ability, and general intelligence. GPT-4.1 mini will now appear in the “more models” menu for paid users and act as the default fallback for free users after exceeding their GPT-4o usage limits. Both models—GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini—have undergone standard safety evaluations, and performance benchmarking data was previously published alongside their API release.
